We Edo period menko was “mud menko” made by baking clay.
The children are thrown into circles or holes drawn on the ground,
and winners and losers are decided according to their positions,
and then they fight over the menkos.
Children were too enthusiastic in playing Menko.
The shogunate, unable to stand the sight of them,
often issued a ban on the game.
I didn’t know they were that popular!

It is said that paper Menko appeared later in the Meiji era,
with pictures of heroes and cartoons that were popular among children.
The way of playing seems to have changed from the Edo period.
