Sarudono and Usahime, the other day, I told you about the Detective Conan monochrome mini series available at Animate.
Today, I would like to tell you about the collaboration between Detective Conan and the National Gallery in London, a limited time store.
(SARUDONO)
Give details.
The official online store of Weekly Shōnen Sunday is currently selling original products made in collaboration with Detective Conan and the London National Gallery, and we are pleased to announce the opening of a limited-time store where you can actually pick up the products!
(Usahime)
It’s nice to be able to actually hold it in my hand and see it!
(SARUDONO)
So, what is the National Gallery of London?
Yes, sir.
The National Gallery of London, which will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2024, is one of the most prestigious British art museums in the world.
The National Gallery of London is home to more than 2,600 Western paintings from the late 13th to the early 20th century.
(Usahime)
200 years?
It’s a museum with a long history!
(SARUDONO)
What kind of collaboration products are there between Detective Conan and the National Gallery in London?
Yes.
This is a collaboration product of “Manga x Art”, combining illustrations of popular characters from Detective Conan with masterpieces from the collection of the National Gallery in London, such as Renoir‘s “Landscape by the Lake” and Monet‘s “La Grenouiller Bathers”,
We have clear files, tote bags, T-shirts, magnets, acrylic stands, postcard sets, canvas art, and more.
(SARUDONO)
There’s a lot of stuff.
(Usahime)
Monet?
Monet was influenced by Japanese ukiyoe!
Is that so?
(Usahime)
Yes.
Look at these two pictures.
(Usahime)
On the left is “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” by Hiroshige Utagawa.
On the right is Monet‘s “Water Lilies” series.
The drum bridge in Hiroshige Utagawa’s Ukiyoe on the left is the motif of Monet’s work on the right.
I see!
(Usahime)
And this!
Is this also from Monet‘s “Water Lilies” series?
(Usahime)
That’s right.
This was also influenced by ukiyoe.
In Europe, the aim was to create a realistic photographic reproduction with an emphasis on perspective.
In contrast, Japanese ukiyoe depicted objects in a certain way, with the near objects larger and the far objects smaller, but the viewpoint was not fixed at a single point.
There were cases in which nearby objects were emphasized very greatly.
This must have been novel and attractive to Western painters of the time.
Japanese ukiyoe has influenced many world-famous painters!
(Usahime)
That’s right.
By the way, Monet was a collector of Ukiyoe.
How many do you think he had?
ten・・・?
(Usahime)
Boo hoo!
The answer is 292 !
Monet must have loved Ukiyoe.
The number is astonishing!
(SARUDONO)
