What is it?
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
Say it!
Yes!
The 56th Kishu Odori “Bundarabushi” will be held in Wakayama Prefecture on Saturday, August 3, and a Daimyo gyoretsu(feudal lord’s procession) will be performed!
![Princess rabbit
(USAHIME)
Really!?
Moreover,
the general public is also allowed to participate in the Daimyo gyoretsu(feudal lord’s procession)!
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
Is that true?
Yes!
The Daimyo gyoretsu(feudal lord’s procession) will be partially performed with the Daimyo palanquin, costumes, tools, etc., which were reconstructed using historical data on the Kishu-Tokugawa family from the Edo period as a reference!

(SARUDONO)
Do you understand Daimyo gyoretsu(feudal lord’s procession)?
Daimyo gyoretsu(feudal lord’s procession) is, simply put, a procession of daimyo on their way to the destination?
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
That’s right.
In 1635, the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, revised the Laws of the Warrior Clans and made it a rule to have the feudal lords of each clan serve at Edo in one-year shifts.
![Princess rabbit
(USAHIME)
That’s called “Sankin-Kohtai” ☆
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
Daimyo (feudal lords) from all over Japan began to travel back and forth between Edo and their own provinces, and Daimyo gyoretsu(feudal lord’s procession) became common.
![](https://japanese-things.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/23604917-1022x720.jpg)
I understand!
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
The Daimyo gyoretsu(feudal lord’s procession) cost a fortune.
Is that so?
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
The Kaga Clan was the richest in Japan.
![Princess rabbit
(USAHIME)
A clan of one million koku!
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
The Kaga Clan spent 500 million yen just for “Sankin-Kohtai” !
![Princess rabbit
(USAHIME)
Not only do they have to travel to Edo, but they also have to build and manage their own houses in order to stay in Edo.
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
When all such expenses were added up, the total cost was said to have sometimes exceeded 1 billion yen!
One billion yen! is it?
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
That’s right.
The main reason for the “Sankin-Kohtai” system was to make the clans spend more money so that they would lose their power and not be able to oppose the Shogunate.
![Princess rabbit
(USAHIME)
If they had the money, they could build weapons and revolt against the Shogunate.
Well, the Shogunate did think hard!
![Princess rabbit
(USAHIME)
Yes, that’s right.
But still, the Daimyo gyoretsu(feudal lord’s procession)…
It brings back memories…
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
Would you like to apply?
Me?
Yes
It’s not something I get to experience very often!
![monkey lord
(SARUDONO)
