Thank you, Father, for everything!
Here is the gift and the letter.
Here you are!
What is it?
What’s going on?
Today is Father’s Day in Japan.
As it is a day to express gratitude, I have prepared a small gift and a letter for you.
Please read the letter in private later, as it is very embarrassing!
Oh, my goodness!
What did you get, Sarudono?
Mm.
Shall I open it?

Oh~!
This is a shichimi pepper from the Shichimiya on the approach to Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto!
You know how much I love shichimi.
Of course!
Father, you put shichimi on everything you eat, don’t you?
Oh. Is that so?
Ho ho ho ho.
By the way,
did shichimi exist in the Edo period when Sarudono and Usahime were around?
Of course!
It all started in 1625, when Karashiya Tokuemon, started selling shichimi (seven spice) by combining herbal medicines based on Chinese medicine.
The fact that they could mix it right in front of us was very well received♪
In no time at all, it spread throughout Edo.
It was even recognized as a gift to Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Tokugawa Shogun!
Shichimi spread not only to Edo, but also to Nagano and Kyoto.
I see!
The three most famous shichimi peppers in Japan are Yagenbori Shichimi Pepper Yagenbori Shichimi Pepper Honpo in Tokyo, and Yawataya Isogoro in Nagano, and Shichimiya in Kyoto!
I didn’t know they had been made that long ago!
Yes.
Unlike today, shichimi became popular in the Edo period (1603-1867) not because of its taste, but rather because of its sterilizing, antiseptic, food poisoning prevention, and wintertime warming effects.
The soba noodles with shichimi (seven spices) warmed me up.
It is true that when I eat shichimi, I start to sweat!
Talking about Soba, I’m getting hungry.
Let’s have soba for lunch!
I’ll sprinkle a lot of shichimi (seven spices) on the soba noodles that Usahime gave me.
Until the soba noodles are cooked, I’ll stay over there and slowly read the Usahime’s writings.
OK!
Then, I will go prepare soba noodles ♪
