Today we are going to Yanagitani Kannon in Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto.
There are about 5,000 hydrangea plants in Yanagitani Kannon, and now is the best time to see them.

We came from the Edo period (1603-1867), but hydrangeas were not so popular then.

However, Matsuo Basho wrote a haiku about hydrangea.
Hydrangea, the light of the katabira time.
( AJISAIYA KATABIRA DOKINO USU ASAGI )
What does that mean?

The time of katabira is just around the time when summer kimonos such as hitoe and hemp are worn.
Usu Asagi is a light blue color.
”Hydrangeas have bloomed in blue.
It’s almost time to start wearing summer kimonos.”
This phrase is a poem about the arrival of summer.

Now, back to the story of Yanagiya Kannon.
The temple is celebrating “Hydrangea Week” from June 1 (Sat.) to June 30 (Sun.),
when the normally closed Kamishoin (the main building of the temple) is open to the public.
You can also get a special goshuin stamp for Hydrangea Week.
You can see various kinds of hydrangeas at the Hydrangea Corridor in the building and the Hydrangea Path along the approach.
Famous for the Hanachozu, ( flower water feature ), that can be found at various locations!
